When I sat down to write this I thought I knew who I was going to write it about, but the truth is I find all kinds of people inspiring. People are by their very nature pretty incredible creatures (some more than others, of course) and I am constantly reminded by how strong, kind, courageous and brilliant some people can be. But here’s my attempt at a short list of people who inspire me creatively.
These guys are a constant source of inspiration. They are the people I grew up with and who made me who I am, so that is always with me in everything I do. They’re a pretty creative bunch too; my grandfather painted ceramics (us grandkids grew up helping him) and both my grandmothers are brilliant knitters, crocheters and needlewomen (is that a word?), so I know that some of my creative talent and inspiration started with them at an early age. My parents are also both creative in their own ways and they’ve worked hard all their lives to provide for us, which has inspired a strong work ethic.
Of course, my sisters deserve a special mention; Fiona is such a talented illustrator and creator of characters. I love that I get to work with her and bounce around ideas with her for Fi & Me, that’s always inspiring stuff. My eldest sister Jenny quit her job to run her own small business, which I think is the coolest. She works so hard at it as well, she is amazing.
I count myself lucky to know so many creative folks. From photographers, musicians, artists and illustrators, designers, tattooists, film makers, comedians, crafters and entrepreneurs.
I always find it inspiring to see people following their dreams, even if in a small way.
Bloggers and business owners
The same goes for people I don’t even know but whose blogs and websites open up a little window into their world. I have seen so many bloggers and creative business owners grow over the last few years, and it inspires me that perhaps I can do the same.
Hearing stories of how people have overcome adversity to achieve good things reminds me to be grateful for what I have and make the most of it.
Also, in a more subtle ‘inspirational’ way, I have always loved to people watch. I find other people, their quirks and mannerisms, entirely fascinating (though conversely I am really shy and get awkward interacting with lots of people, weird) and that has often inspired my writing and creative process.
What or who inspires you?
