Making of a (Mini) Magazine

One of the things that’s kept me busy and away from the blog recently has been finishing up my college course.

Every Tuesday night since September, I’ve been attending night classes at my local college to study graphic design. It’s not a super formal course (but I do get a little certificate at the end of it) so you could tailor your brief to whatever your interests were. I’m not a complete newcomer to design having messed around a little with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Dreamweaver, but I’m largely self-taught and have always focused on the web side of things (that’s my job!) So I was interested in mixing my interests in design and writing to make a magazine.

It’s been a really fun and interesting process. Research (i.e. buying lots of magazines) was, of course, quite enjoyable. I remember when I was training to be a journalist there were no cool women’s magazines that focused on art and creativity, or anything other than diets and men really, so it’s great to see lots of inspiring new titles out there.

I’d really like to get some copies of my magazine printed, and I’m definitely going to be hosting it online somewhere so watch this space. But in the meantime here are a few shots I snapped during the process.

I’m really proud of how it turned out, and I’ve had so much fun experimenting with loads of different design techniques including drawing, painting, paper cutting, lino printing and screen printing, as well as using digital software.
