What do you love and would like to make money from?
If you follow my blog, you’ll know that I run a small handmade business with my sister, Fiona. Like this blog it’s called Fi & Me; we make and sell cute and cool illustrations and handmade things.
We’ve been in ‘start-up’ mode for years, but the fact that I work full-time and Fi part-time whilst being a full-time mum to two little girls, makes it difficult to grow this to being our full-time gig. I guess you could say that it’s a hobby business – it makes us a little pocket money on the side, but we mainly just do it for the love.
There are lots of things I do for love when I’m not in the day job, and I guess it is for me – as for many – the dream to be able to make a living from these endeavours. I am happiest when I am designing and making handmade things, dressmaking and upcycling vintage and second-hand clothes.
I also get a lot of enjoyment out of writing and blogging (got to put that Journalism degree to use somehow!), building websites, taking pictures and making videos, being outdoors, and staying fit. If I could build myself a career that included some or all of these things, then I’d be a very happy girl indeed.
In fact, I often joke that what I really need is a different job for every day of the week just to keep myself interested!
What I do know is that I want to work for myself, doing what I enjoy and am good at (I’ve been reading a lot about motivated skills recently, look it up, it’s very interesting) – even if that is part of the time. I’m not entirely sure what shape that is going to take yet (I am currently knee-deep in business/life planning) but I’m excited to find out where it takes me.
Do you make a living from doing what you love or have a ‘passion project’ you do for the love and/or money?
